History




Mario Nandayapa Quartet is a distinguished musical ensemble whose legacy traces back to its roots in Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico. Founded in 1917 with the establishment of the marimba construction workshop "Nandayapa," this surname has cultivated a craft tradition that endures to this day.

The ensemble's history is marked by a succession of significant milestones that have left an indelible mark on both the national and international music scene. From the early steps of Maestro Zeferino Nandayapa in the marimba, the ensemble has been a pioneer in exploring and disseminating the cultural richness of Chiapas through music.

With the move to Mexico City in 1946, Zeferino Nandayapa brought with him his passion for the marimba and his commitment to musical excellence. Mario Nandayapa joined his father in 1977 at the age of 14. Since then, he has achieved success both nationally and internationally, establishing themselves as cultural ambassadors of Mexico.

Nandayapa's music has participated in world-renowned events, from their special participation in the Munich Olympics in 1972 to their debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1989, accompanied by the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Their music has captivated audiences worldwide, transcending borders and solidifying their place in the history of Mexican music.

With a trajectory spanning over a century, Mario Nandayapa Quartet continues their legacy of excellence and passion for music. From their beginnings in Chiapas to their performances on the world's most prestigious stages, the ensemble remains a beacon of Mexican culture, inspiring generations with their art and unwavering dedication to the marimba and traditional Mexican music.

1917

• Establishment of the "Nandayapa" marimba construction workshop, marking the genesis of an artisanal tradition that endures to this day.

1931

• On August 26th, Maestro Zeferino Nandayapa is born in Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, whose influence will become a milestone in the history of the marimba.

1934

• Maestro Norberto Nandayapa crafts a small marimba for his son Zeferino, a gesture igniting his innate connection with this musical instrument.

1938

• Zeferino Nandayapa forms the children's group "Los Muchachitos," a foundational step in his journey towards musical excellence.

1946

• Zeferino Nandayapa relocates to Mexico City to study orchestral conducting at the prestigious National Conservatory of Music, solidifying his dedication to music.

1956

• Establishment of the "Maderas Chiapanecas" marimba group by Zeferino Nandayapa, a platform propelling the cultural richness of Chiapas to new horizons.

1960

• Creation of the Nandayapa Classical Quartet by Zeferino Nandayapa, a ensemble fusing marimba tradition with classical elements, elevating art to new heights.

1972

• Special participation at the Munich Olympic Games, where Zeferino Nandayapa's music captivated audiences worldwide, cementing his international legacy.

1977

• Debut of the young prodigy, Maestro Mario Nandayapa, at the age of 14 at the iconic Café Ágora in Mexico City, heralding the emergence of a new generation of talent in the Nandayapa family.

1979

• Notable participation at the International Youth Congress in Zagreb, Croatia, where the musical legacy of the Nandayapa family transcended borders, inspiring youth worldwide.

1981-1982

• Tour across the United States with Maestro Zeferino Nandayapa's ensemble, introducing Chiapaneca marimba music to new international audiences.

1984

• Participation in the prestigious "Bregenz am Bodensee" Festival in Vienna, Austria, where Zeferino Nandayapa's music mesmerized the international audience, solidifying his reputation as a master of the marimba.

1988

• Debut at the P.A.S.I.C.'88 Convention (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) in San Antonio, Texas, USA, marking a milestone in Zeferino Nandayapa's career by presenting his percussive artistry to a global audience of musicians and enthusiasts.

1989

• Notable participation of Maestro Zeferino Nandayapa in the premiere of "El espíritu de la tierra" composed by Federico Álvarez del Toro, conducted by Eduardo Mata, at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London, accompanied by the renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This event brought the richness of Mexican music to one of the world's most prestigious concert halls, solidifying Zeferino Nandayapa's legacy as a cultural ambassador of his country.

1990

• Participation in the Specialized Expo '90 in Osaka, Japan; Exhibition "Mexico, Splendors of 30 Centuries" in New York, San Antonio, and Los Angeles, USA.

1991

• Special participation with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City at the Silvestre Revueltas Hall of the Ollin Yoliztli Cultural Center, CDMX.

1992

• Universal Exhibition "Expo'92" in Seville, Spain. Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany. UNESCO Cinema Hall in Paris, France. Special participation with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City at the Museum of Anthropology, CDMX. • National tour with the OSIM and tour in Texas, where they alternated with the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio and the Youth Orchestra of Fort Worth.

• Special participation with Chiapaneca marimba in the concert of Oscar Chávez at the National Auditorium, national tour, and Spain with the Infant Symphony Orchestra of Mexico.
